Everything still waiting for a category, grouped by month so you can clear them quickly.
Budgets
Set a monthly limit per category across the year, and see how one month is tracking.
What's still to spend on this month's events is already counted as “still to come” below. To give an event room in a month's budget, add its amount to that category.
Shows every month of this year — enter an amount in any cell. The Total column adds up the whole year for that category. The category column stays put as you scroll sideways. Shift+click to select a range, then Ctrl/Cmd+C and Ctrl/Cmd+V (or the Copy/Paste buttons) to move it to a different month.
Bills and subscriptions currently marked "repeats monthly" (via the checkbox when adding or editing a transaction), each shown at its most recent amount.
Calendar
What you spent each day, the bills still to come, and the things you're planning — a birthday gift, a trip, a party.
Nothing planned yet. Plan a birthday gift, a trip or a party: give it a date and an amount, then tag what you spend on it — the app shows how much is left, adds it to this month's forecast and reminds you in time.
Budget ideas
Split into what's fixed (recurring bills) and what's flexible (everything else). The flexible part is seasonal where it can be — it uses past occurrences of the same calendar month once there's more than a year of history, falling back to a flat 12-month average until then.
Optional — keep suggestions realistic by capping them to what you actually earn.
When suggestions add up to more than this, flexible categories without their own cap below are scaled down proportionally to fit — fixed bills and any capped category are left as they are.
Suppliers
Group the different spellings a supplier shows up under (receipts, bank imports, manual entries) so your spend totals per supplier are accurate.
Tick two or more spellings that are really the same supplier, give the group a name, and merge them.
Compare months
See how your spending has moved from month to month.
YTD totals actual spend from January through today; Avg/mo YTD divides that by the months elapsed. The current month's column, and Year to go, both use what you've set in Budgets — Year to go covers this month through December, and Avg/mo YTG divides that by the months left.
Visuals
A closer look at your spending, in pictures. This is a first pass — tell me what you'd like changed.
Build your own charts: choose what to measure, how to group it, the period and the chart type. Start from scratch or from one of these:
Turn this month's visuals into a PowerPoint deck — one slide per chart, with a short write-up under each.
Follows the month picked above. The same-month-last-year line only shows once there's data that far back.
What each tag cost in total, across categories and months. Tag transactions in Transactions (✎ → Tags, or "Tag all listed").
From transactions you've itemized — open one in Transactions and tap ▤ to break it down (e.g. sweets, drinks, veggies within Groceries).
Trophies
Add a transaction
Scan a receipt, or enter an out-of-pocket spend by hand.
Optional: what was on the receipt. Saved as the transaction's item breakdown (Visuals → Item breakdown).
Import a bank statement
Works with the transaction history export from your bank app (.xls, .xlsx or .csv).
Categories & rules
Manage the spend categories, and the keywords Penny & Quill uses to guess them automatically.
Checks every transaction against your current rules and updates any that match a different category than it currently has. Renaming a category above already updates its transactions automatically — this is for when you've only changed keyword rules.
Used when itemizing a receipt — Penny & Quill suggests a subcategory (e.g. Sweets, Alcohol, Vegetables & fruit) for each product it recognizes. Always shown as a suggestion for you to check, never applied silently.
A word in a transaction's note adds a tag — e.g. "wakacje" → Wakacje 2026. Applied to new transactions as they come in (imports, bank sync, scans, manual entries, edits); upper/lower case and Polish letters don't matter. Rules only add tags, never remove them.
Settings
Choose the app's display language.
Amounts are kept and shown in this currency. Statement rows and receipts in another currency are converted with the European Central Bank rate for their date.
Pick the look of the ledger.
A small decoration in the corner and, for a few seconds after you log in, falling leaves, snowflakes or petals.
For meals you pay for out: write what you ate in the note (e.g. "pizza margherita large, cola 0.5") and the app estimates the calories. Scanned restaurant receipts are estimated from their dishes. Only that text is sent — to your own Netlify scanner service, the same as receipt scanning.
Estimates only (typical portions; restaurant dishes can differ by 20–30 %). You can correct any number in the transaction (✎). Off by default; this setting is per profile and device.
Each profile is its own separate ledger. Give a profile more than one login to share it (like a household budget you and someone else both unlock with your own password) — or create a separate profile for someone who should have their own private ledger, like a kid.
Export everything as a backup file, restore it later, or wipe it and start fresh.
A little "wrapped"-style summary shows up automatically once a new month starts (and once a year, every January).
A short tip pops up the first time you open the app each day, to help you discover what it can do.
Keeps all your devices in step by itself.
Not needed: Sync with your account already keeps your devices in step and keeps an encrypted copy of your ledger on the server.
Your weekly encrypted backups to Google Drive are paused while you use Sync with your account.
Optional — keeps this device and others (like the Android widget app) in step, using your own Google Drive as the go-between. Nothing here is shared with anyone but you.
Not connected
If two devices aren't syncing with each other, it's usually because each created its own file. Pick the one the other device is already using:
A full backup, locked with a passphrase only you know, saved to your Google Drive once a week. Google (or anyone who gets into your Drive) sees only scrambled data. The last 8 backups are kept.
Pulls new transactions from the bank accounts you connected at open-banking.io, through this site's own server function. Your bank login and decryption key never reach the app.
Not set up on this profile.
Point this at a folder where you save bank statement exports, and Ledger checks it for new files — either importing them right away or asking you first, your choice.
